Glasite Meeting House Update                                                     updated 09.08.04
Members may recall my report in the winter 2001 magazine, explaining the outcome of the feasibility study, and Council's resolve to take forward the recommendations by seeking to increase rental income, and exploring the possibility of promoting the GMH as a centre for architectural heritage in Scotland.

These objectives have been actively pursued, while recognising the practical need to ensure the essential key functions of the Society do not suffer consequentially. Early actions have included some housekeeping matters such as refreshing the external paintwork, and lettering over the (present) main door. Scruffy cardboard signs have been banished from the door and a new brass letter plate is planned with flexibility to cater for our several tenants.

Ongoing drainage defects, the source of long term dampness on the south wall and in the basement cellar, has been finally resolved following some invasive detective work and a great deal of toil by the contractor!

Monitoring, inspection and maintenance procedures are now in place that should ensure any potential sources of damage to the building are identified at an early stage, and budgets are allocated annually towards upkeep and gradual improvement.

Thanks to a very generous donation we have been able to arrange for much needed repair work to be carried out on the Glasite furniture collection. The pieces can now be enjoyed with more confidence (but always with the necessary care!) and have now been placed within the McWilliam Room.

In furtherance of the longer term aims, we have applied to Historic Scotland for a building repair grant, and it is hoped that the external repair works started by the previous owners can be completed to a high standard. Notwithstanding the availability of public funds this will inevitably require a major financial commitment to be made by the Society over the next few years.

The GMH Strategy Group will continue to move the overall aims for the building forward, as instructed by Council, while the Fabric Sub-group deals with day-to-day responsibility for upkeep. Visitors to the GMH are invited to explore and enjoy our headquarters, whilst ensuring they respect the fabric and its contents.
