A national conference in recognition of 50 years of the European Cultural Convention. Supported by Historic Scotland, The National Trust for Scotland and The Scottish Civic Trust.

Saturday 9 October 2004, 9.30am - 5.00pm, Pollock House, Glasgow

This is a rare opportunity to survey how historic places in Europe have shaped the thinking and understanding of the architects of Scotland's heritage. The direct experience of Europe has influenced Scottish perceptions about our place within the continent. This busy day of investigations concludes with an opportunity for more informal discussion with the speakers, all themselves authorities in their own field.

Talks: Scots and European Places, c.1400-c.1700; 'Bob the Roman': Robert Adam's Roman experience; J. J. Couven: A Franco-German house for Fife; Three Scotsmen, horticulture and diplomacy in a post-conflict Europe; The Italian diaries of John Kinross; Mackintosh and the Belgians; J. J. Joass and Italy; Ian Hamilton Finlay's Little Sparta: European connections; Europe in Scotland - Scotland in Europe.

Speakers: Geoffrey Stell; Alistair Rowan; David Adshead; Christopher Dingwall; Deborah Mays; Elaine Grogan; John Frew; James Lawson; Peter Wilson.

Annual General Meeting
Saturday 6 November 2004, 2.00pm at the Royal British Hotel, 20 Princes Street, Edinburgh.

Following the AGM there will be a presentation on the Playfair Project
by Scott Robertson, project advisor and an opportunity to view the complex.

'One of the world's finest visual arts complexes opened in the heart of Edinburgh this August, with the realisation of the final phase of the Playfair Project. The opening of the Playfair Link - an ingeniously designed underground link between the National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy Building - brings to completion this ambitious £30 million project. The five-year scheme has already seen the restoration and refurbishment of the RSA Building, which opened to the public in August 2003. The Playfair Project has given Scotland a gallery space of international standing... '.

An indication of attendance to the national office would be appreciated by 29 October 2004. Please email nationaloffice@ahss.org.uk
