Doors Open Day 2008

Once again, the Glasite Meeting House participated in Edinburgh’s Doors Open Day on 27th September.  The building was opened in Doors Open Day 2007 and saw over 450 visitors during the day.  There was doubt as to whether the Glasite would be able to beat that figure in 2008, but we were hopeful to at least match it.  To our delight the Glasite welcomed just short of 700 visitors, few of whom had come the previous year.

The Glasite offered a range of attractions throughout the day: the Edinburgh Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra generously made a repeat appearance, serenading visitors for much of the afternoon with traditional Scottish music, as did the display of the History of the Glasites and information on the repair work.  A noteworthy addition to the 2008 programme was the Australian Girls Choir; the 53-member strong choir filled the Main Hall with a variety of lively songs in the morning, ranging from traditional folk songs to pop tunes.  There was the added attraction to the 2008 Doors Open Day of the Cockburn Association’s photo contest. The Glasite saw many eager amateur and professional photographers carefully searching for a winning shot.

The day could only be interpreted as a success, by the enthusiastic photographers, inquisitive visitors, and volunteers alike.  Once again, hopefully participation in the event helped to raise awareness of the Glasite Meeting House and the AHSS.
