Doors Open Day 2007

On 29 September 2007, the Glasite Meeting House was opened to the public as part of Edinburgh’s Doors Open Day. There was some uncertainty as to how successful the day would be, but fortunately there was a steady stream of visitors throughout the day and the total number of visitors greatly exceeded expectations, reaching over 450 in total.

Those who came to view the building were able to find out more about its original use and the Glasites who worshipped there, and they were also entertained with traditional Scottish music played by some local musicians who kindly volunteered their time.  As the Glasite Meeting House has recently undergone repair work, mainly to the exterior, there was also a display about various types of stone (for which we are grateful to the British Geological Survey and the University of Dundee) and some samples so that people could discover how decay affects different stones, and as a result, the buildings they make up.

Overall, the day seemed to have been a success, and there were many enthusiastic visitors who were keen to learn about the building.  Hopefully the event has also helped to raise further awareness of the AHSS, and perhaps even tempted a few more people to become members!
