Down the centuries, many enterprising individuals from Britain – particularly from Scotland –have found their fortunes in Russia. They first served the Tsars as doctors, and as officers of the army and navy. But by the eighteenth century it was as architects, garden designers and engineers that the British made their mark, leaving a lasting influence on palaces, gardens and townscapes, much of which can still be appreciated today.

The lecture is informed by Dr Patricia Andrew’s own personal experience of visits to Russia and her talks to international groups travelling to St Petersburg.
