Joseph Sharples reflects on the twelve months he spent in Aberdeen, 2009–2010, researching and writing about the city’s architecture for the Buildings of Scotland volume, Aberdeenshire: South and Aberdeen. He describes the process of research and fieldwork, and the challenge of distilling the Granite City’s architectural riches – from the cloistered precincts of King’s College to the harbour installations of today – into 200 pages of text in the approved Pevsner format.
