We have chosen a region of England of considerable architectural and scenic interest. It was the locus of often violent relationships between Scotland and England; so is of particular historic interest. Architecturally it is more diverse than customarily thought, and is marked by the unspoiled nature of its small towns and villages.
We shall study work by Anthony Salvin, William Butterfield, Luigi Canina, John Dobson and Michael Hopkins. The Millennium of buildings which we shall study finishes in the present century, and conservation will not be neglected.
