F&B: The best use is the next use: adaptation of industrial buildings around the Forth and Borders with Mark Watson

Monday 27 February 2027
From subtle alterations to dramatic transformations, this talk explores former industrial buildings across south-east Scotland contribute to a sense of place and the environmental value of reusing existing buildings.

Mon, 8th February 2027 | 6:30 -8:30pm | Augustine United Church, 41 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1EL

Factories, power stations, breweries and mills dot the townscapes of south-east Scotland, reinforcing a sense of place. In almost every case they are converted to other purposes, some long ago, some recently, and many around 1980-2008. Adaptations stretch the versatility of architects, planners and engineers: some changes are imperceptible, some are dramatic in ways rarely accepted in other types of listed building. Might past harm to the environment be forgiven after repeated re-use of the embodied energy invested in existing buildings?
