Saving Peter Womersley’s Bernat Klein Studio
The AHSS welcomes the initiative by the Bernat Klein Studio Coalition to fundraise and acquire and restore the Bernat Klein Studio, designed by modernist architect Peter Womersley for textile designer Bernat Klein, and urges members to support the Crowdfunding appeal now underway and being managed by the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust on behalf of the Coalition Partners, SHBT, the National Trust for Scotland and the Bernat Klein Foundation.
The Society has been dismayed by the neglect, deterioration and decay of this important building and wishes the Coalition success in first acquiring and then in making the building watertight ahead of developing it as a design and community centre.
The recent restoration of High Sunderland and the publication of Shelley Klein’s excellent book ‘The See-Through House’, which includes descriptions of the Studio, add a stronger incentive to see this important building rescued. AHSS members may recall a lecture with a difference in April 2021 when Shelly Klein was in conversation with photographer Colin McLean and architectural historian Simon Green about her book.
